JAKARTA-- The US embassy in Jakarta has apologized and assured the Indonesian government that Indonesia Armed Forces chief General Gatot Nurmantyo would be welcomed, but did not say why he had been denied entry in the first place.
"They said they regretted and apologized," Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi said, after meeting the US deputy ambassador to Indonesia, Erin McKee.
"But I said that was not enough," she said. "We still need an explanation why it happened."
Gem Nurmantyo had been invited to attend a conference on fighting extremism on Oct 23 and 24 by the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Joseph Dunford.
But he was told by airline staff before departure on Sat, Oct 21 that US Customs and Border Protection had denied him entry.
The Indonesian military has been accused of human rights violations in the past, but Gen Nurmantyo himself has not been implicated in any abuses.
