INDONESIA’S MILITARY CHIEF GEN. GATOT PREVENTED FROM BOARDING FLIGHT TO US

JAKARTA-- Indonesia's chief of armed forces Gen. Gatot Nurmantyo has been prevented from boarding a flight bound to the United States.

Gatot is said to have been notified of the restriction by Emirates' authorities, the Dubai-based airlines that was supposed to fly him to the US.

Tribunnews.com reported Sunday that Gatot and his wife were about to fly to the US to attend a conference under the invitation of chairman of US Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Joseph Dunford in Washington, DC.

Gatot was scheduled to depart on Sat at 5 p.m. on Emirates flight number EK 0357, but just before taking off from Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Cengkareng, Banten, he was informed that he would not be able to enter the US.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Arrmanatha Nasir said that the Indonesian Embassy in Washington, DC, had sent a diplomatic note to the US Foreign Affairs Ministry asking for clarification regarding the incident.

The ministry had also sent a diplomatic note this morning to the US Embassy in Jakarta for the same concerns, Arrmanatha said in a written statement.

Foreign Minister Retno LP Marsudi had asked Brian McFeeters, deputy chief of mission with the US Embassy in Jakarta, to come to the ministry's office Mon, Oct 23 to clarify the matter, as US Ambassador to Indonesia Joseph R. Donovan was away, Arrmanatha said.
