Gresik, E Java (ANTARA News) - President Joko Widodo expressed congratulations to mothers and women on the occasion of the International Womens Day in front of the recipients of Smart Indonesia Card, Hope Family Program, and Social Rice (Rastra) assistance.
"I would like to say, happy International Womens Day to the mothers that are present here and to all Indonesian women whom I am proud of and respect," said the President in Gresik, East Java on Thursday.
The President was accompanied by First Lady Iriana Joko Widodo, Minister/State Secretary Pratikno, Minister of Education and Culture Muhadjir Effendi and a number of other relevant officials.
"Once again Happy International Womens Day, let us work for a more peaceful, prosperous life and an increasingly just life," he added.
The 2018 International Womens Day fell on March 8, which is originally based on a demonstration of women in New York, United States on March 8, 1908.
Proponents of the movement are women workers in garment factories, demanding rights for opinion and politics.
However, the United Nations did not recognise the day as an international event until the International Womens Day on March 8, 1975.
