Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Minister of Transportation Budi Karya Sumadi has prepared an instrument to mediate in the row over the low tariff of online motorcycle taxis (Ojek) following protests by drivers.
"We have several instruments in place to mediate in the matter related to the transportation rates of online Ojek," he noted after a speech at the opening of the 2018 Coordination Meeting of Transportation Attache in Jakarta on Wednesday.
Sumadi remarked that the Ministry of Transportation had intervened through a persuasive measure for service provider companies or applicators, as motorcycles are not categorized as a means of public transportation in accordance with Law Number 22 of 2009 on Road Transport Traffic.
Hence, the ministry has no authority to manage Ojek since it is, in fact, an environment-friendly mode of transportation.
However, Sumadi said if applicators continue to reject any intervention on tariff reduction, the ministry will take firm measures.
The minister suggested that applicators should take into account several factors while determining the transportation rates and should not solely seek profits.
"We appeal to the operators. If the provision of service is just about a large market share, then the victims will be the drivers that work to meet their daily needs," he pointed out.
Hence, the minister is optimistic that the tariffs would be determined in a proper manner.
"If you speak for a while, the people will be happy with the low tariff, but it will disrupt the drivers revenue to meet their needs. I always say that do not only think about business; there should be consideration as part of our responsibility to society," he emphasized.
Sumadi said his side will again hold discussions with stakeholders on Wednesday afternoon on the tariff for online Ojek.
