JAKARTA, Indonesia Who says the cost of living in Jakarta is low? In fact, Jakarta is higher than Kuala Lumpur, said the Economist Intelligence Unit's Worldwide Cost of Living Report.
Singapore remains the most expensive city in the world and in Southeast Asia.
The survey compares more than 400 individual prices across over 150 products and services.
The report examines the world's most and least expensive cities by comparing factors such as wages and the prices of more than 150 items, including bread, cigarettes, and unleaded petrol.
The cost of living in each city is ranked in comparison with New York City which received an index score of 100, and one extra point equates to a 1% increase in living costs.
This is called the World Cost of Living (WCOL) Index.
The cost of living in Asia's rapidly expanding cities like Singapore, Hong Kong, and Seoul has surged in recent years. Asian cities have dominated and in the last two rankings.
The report released on March 15 ranked Bangkok in second spot followed by Phnom Penh (3), Ho Chin Minh City (4), Jakarta (5), Bandar Seri Bagawan (6) and Kuala Lumpur (7).
