Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has called on all parties to get rid of sectoral ego in the management of transportation since national interest must be prioritized.
While chairing a limited cabinet meeting, here, Tuesday, Jokowi highlighted the need to tackle traffic jams in big cities, including Jabodetabek or Greater Jakarta, that had inflicted huge losses.
Traffic congestion had caused losses amounting to Rp65 trillion in Jabodetabek annually, the president quoted data from the National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas).
"The vice president, the governor mentioned Rp100 trillion. It is a huge amount," he noted.
The limited cabinet meeting discussed transportation management in Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, and Bekasi (Jabodetabek), he remarked.
Jokowi has assigned Vice President M. Jusuf Kalla to coordinate with ministers and governors in the development of an integrated transportation management system, particularly in urban areas.
He emphasized the importance of integrating urban transportation system and spatial planning. The president expressed belief that the problem of traffic jams would be solved if the MRT, LRT, Transjakarta, and KRL commuter trains were to be integrated.
