Batam, Riau Islands (ANTARA) - A patrol vessel of the Marine and Air Police of Riau Island succeeded in evacuating the SB Tenggiri 4 ship, which sank in the waters of Tikus Island in Karimun District, Riau Islands.
Head of Public Relations of the Riau Islands Police Senior Commissioner S Erlangga said here on Monday the patrol vessel along with another patrol vessel of the Karimun Marine Police and the locals pulled the SB Tenggiri 4 ship to the Kenipaan Island Beach.
On Sunday (29/7), the SB Tenggiri 4 departed from Buton, Riau for Tanjung Riau in Batam. "Due to strong waves at around 12:30 a.m., the SB Tenggiri 4 arrived in the waters of Tikus Island and at coordinates 0 55,632" N-103 19,824 "suffered a leak at the stern," he said.
Sea water entered the ship, but the crew had difficulty pumping it and the ship sank.
"Then, the captain and crews summoned fishermen who passed by and asked for help," he said.
There were no fatalities in the disaster.
The Marine and Air Police officers and the community managed to rescue six skipper and crews of the SB Tengiri 4 Ship, comprising Abdul Jamil (39), Mahadar (24), Ijal (25), Ayib (25), Yuda (25) and Sarifudin (25).
Erlangga appealed to all operators of sea transportation to equipped their ships with safety equipment such as life jackets and buoys.
