Beijing The Indonesian swimming team which was trapped at the Hong Kong International Airport after violent protests Monday, August 12, forced flight cancellations, are returning home with assistance from the Indonesian Consulate General in Hong Kong. "So, they can be flown home today between 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m.," Indonesian acting Consul General in Hong Kong, Mandala S. Purba, told Antara Beijing Tuesday.
Following the shutdown of Hong Kong airport Monday, as many as 47 swimmers from DKI Jakarta had spent the night at the consulate while waiting for the situation at the airport to improve and the resumption of commercial flights.
The swimmers had participated in the Hong Kong Open Swimming Championship between August 10 and 12, 2019.
"We are the (swimming) team from Jakarta which was doing a try out for the Hong Kong Open. Incidentally, our trip back home was hampered by demonstrations which caused all flights to be canceled," the team's coach, Felix C. Sutanto said.
However, the Indonesian Consulate General was very responsive and took care of them.
In addition to the swimmers, the consulate general is also assisting Indonesian migrant workers who want to return following massive protests against the government over the past two weeks in Hong Kong. (INE)
