Depok, W Java (ANTARA) - Environment activists, grouped in the Depok Ciliwung Community (KCD), held a flag-hoisting ceremony at the Ciliwung riverbank in Depok, West Java, to mark Indonesia's 74th Independence Day on Saturday.
The flag-hoisting team employed a rubber boat to access the flag pole installed on rocks in the middle of the river.
Coordinator of KCD Taufik DS revealed that activists, students, and local residents attended the ceremony.
"The spirit of the nation's struggle to attain independence will remain alive in the hearts of the people. The same spirit will be upheld to prevent Ciliwung from damage by both natural and human causes," Taufik stated.
KCD is a volunteer group working independently to protect Ciliwung River from further damage due to riverbank changes; waste disposal from factories, slaughterhouse, as well as households; and people poisoning the river to get fish.
The community has urged the local government to adopt concrete measures to stave off further damage to the river. It also appealed to residents living near the river to take care of it.
