Ministry dispatches aid packages to schools reeling from floods

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Education and Culture Ministry has sent aid packages for schools in Greater Jakarta ravaged by floods.

The ministry's Secretary General Prof Ainun Na'im stated here on Friday that the aid packages were distributed by a team of the Directorate General of Primary and Secondary Education to the affected schools since Thursday (Jan 2).

"Since yesterday, the team has distributed the aid packages, particularly to support the learning process in schools, including those in Lebak District, Banten," Na'im remarked.

Na'im noted that the ministry had worked in coordination with the education and culture offices in the regions to mitigate the impact of floods on the learning activities in schools.

Some campuses have also raised funds to help flood survivors in the area.

Coordinator for Indonesia's Education Observer Network (JPPI) Ubaid Matraji earlier stated that the ministry had slowly responded to help schools affected by the flood in the Greater Jakarta.

"Many schools were affected by the flood, access to schools were interrupted, and many school facilities were damaged," he pointed out.

Tens of thousands of people were evacuated on Thursday after floods and landslides in the area claimed up to 21 lives.

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) issued a warning on heavy rains across the Greater Jakarta area and the possibility of flooding during the February-March 2020 period.
