Ma’ruf Amin chairs limited meeting on handling radicalism

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Vice President Ma'ruf Amin chaired a limited meeting, here, Wednesday, on the handling of radicalism wherein the attendees comprised ministers and Head of the National Counterterrorism Agency (BNPT) Suhardi Alius.

"This is a follow-up meeting to deal with radicalism. We (the government) want to handle it from upstream to downstream, and it concerns every sector being the source of radicalism," Amin remarked here on Wednesday.

The vice president believes sources that have the potential to spread radical ideas, include schools and government offices. Hence, radicalism can be overcome through education and regulation of the state civil apparatus (ASN).

"Among other things, education and ASN are our topics of discussion at this meeting," he noted.

Coordinating Minister for Political, Law and Security Affairs Mahfud MD, Minister for Administrative Reform and Bureaucracy Reform (PANRB) Tjahjo Kumolo, Minister of Education and Culture Nadiem Makarim, Minister of Communication and Informatics Johnny G. Plate, Minister of Finance Sri Mulyani Indrawati, Minister of State Enterprises (BUMN) Erick Thohir, and National Police Chief General Idham Azis attended the meeting.

Earlier, at the first meeting on terrorism handling on November 15, 2019, a decision was taken that coordination for the handling of radicalism would be under the vice president and no longer led by the coordinating minister for political, law, and security affairs.

Amin believes that efforts to combat terrorism and deal with radicalism must be initiated from the smallest strata of community groups, such as RT and RW (neighborhood association). The vice president gave due importance to the roles of RT heads and RW heads since they are the closest and know their respective citizens.

"RT and RW must be involved and invited, given authority, and facilitated, so that they not only take care of the documents but also know what the surrounding community is like, whether anyone is exposed," the vice president stated.
