. 800 job aspirants failing civil servant recruitment protest in Papua

Jayapura, Papua (ANTARA) – Some 800 people protested in Keppi, the capital of Mappi District, in Papua after being unsuccessful in clearing the civil servant recruitment process on Tuesday.

The demonstration, which began at 7 a.m. local time in front of the Mappi Regional Civil Service Agency (BKD), took a violent turn, as demonstrators went on a rampage and inflicted damage to the office, Mappi Police Chief Adjunct Senior Commissioner Cosmos Jeujanan revealed.

The demonstrators, who rejected the result of the recruitment process, then marched to the Mappi District Administration office and vandalized the office.

“The protesters entered the office and continued to damage some properties. They demanded that civil servant positions in the region should only be filled by native Papuans,” Jeujanan stated.

Normalcy could be restored in the situation and be kept under control after Mappi District Head Kristosimus Agawemu spoke in detail with them about the civil servant recruitment process.

The protesters dispersed at around 11:30 a.m. local time.

“We have yet to calculate the financial losses caused by the vandalism,” Jeujanan stated.

A total of five thousand job seekers in the district had applied for civil servant positions, though only 400 were admitted.
