Task Force urges COVID-19 survivors to donate convalescent plasma

Jakarta The COVID-19 Handling Task Force made an earnest appeal to survivors of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) to come forward to donate convalescent plasma to help in curing other patients.

“Convalescent plasma donation is a noble action to thank God for the recovery,” Prof. Wiku Adisasmito, a spokesman of the task force, noted in a statement here on Wednesday.

Convalescent plasma therapy aims to treat patients with COVID-19 infections using the plasma collected from recovered patients.

Convalescent plasma has been used for the treatment of infectious diseases for over a century, under the assumption that passive immunization can “jump start” the immune system to control the evolution of the disease until a specific immune response is established in the infected person.

Adisasmito emphasized that by donating convalescent plasma, COVID-19 survivors can help patients in their fight against the virus.

People keen to donate convalescent plasma can register through the website plasmakonvalesen.covid19.go.id or Ayo Donor PMI application and call center number 117 ext 5.

The Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) has opened access for people keen on donating convalescent plasma.

Among the requirements for donors are COVID-19 survivors that receive a negative result in the PCR test, did not exhibit COVID-19 symptoms for 14 days after being hospitalized or self-isolation, and female donors that are not pregnant or have never been pregnant before.

Several research indicate that the therapy can prevent COVID-19 symptoms from further aggravating.

Patients, who received convalescent plasma, with high titers of antibodies to SARS CoV-2, within the next 72 hours, would show a declining risk for breathing difficulties.
