The government has vowed to construct houses for families of the sailors of KRI Nanggala-402 that sank and all aboard declared dead in the waters north of Bali, President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) stated.
The president made the statement on Thursday during his visit to families of the submarine’s crew members at the Navy’s Air Base Juanda in Surabaya, East Java, as in a video aired on the Presidential Secretariat’s YouTube account.
The president noted that the families will have the option to determine the location of the house, he remarked. “It can be in Gresik, Sidoarjo, or other locations,” the president noted.
Jokowi has tasked Indonesian Military Commander Air Chief Marshal Hadi Tjahjanto and Navy Chief of Staff Admiral Yudo Margono with realizing the plan.
“The mechanism will be handled by the Navy chief of staff and Indonesian Military chief. Hence, it can be materialized soon,” Jokowi stated.
The president reiterated that the government will posthumously promote the 53 on-duty crew members that died and guarantee the education of their children up to the bachelor’s degree level.
“The state will award promotion from their current rank to the next higher rank to honor their sacrifice to the country, and as we have conveyed before, for your children, the state would guarantee their education until bachelor’s degree,” Jokowi remarked.
Jokowi offered his deep condolences over the passing of the 53 Hiu Kencana Corps patriots.
“On behalf of the country, the government, and the nation, I offered my deep condolences over the demise of the KRI Nanggala-402 patriots. May their souls receive the best place by the side of the One Almighty God,” he affirmed.
The Indonesian submarine KRI Nanggala-402, with 53 crew members aboard, went missing on Wednesday (April 21) while partaking in a torpedo drill in the north Bali waters.
On Sunday (April 25), the military chief confirmed that KRI Nanggala 402 has sunk, and all crew members on board had died.
The German-made submarine was discovered in three pieces at a depth of 838 meters in the ocean.
