President observes quake-affected area in East Java’s Malang District

President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) observed an earthquake-hit area in Malang District, East Java Province, on Thursday.

“I am in Majangtengah Village, Malang District, to observe (the impact of) the earthquake that struck some time ago,” Jokowi noted in Malang District, East Java.

The president, along with House of Representatives Speaker Puan Maharani, Public Works and People’s Housing Minister Basuki Hadimuljono, and Cabinet Secretary Pramono Anung, undertook a visit to the quake-hit area.

The president’s entourage also comprised Chief of Presidential Secretariat Heru Budi Hartono; Presidential Military Secretary Rear Marshal M. Tonny Harjono; Commander of the Presidential Security Detail (Paspampres) Major General Agus Subiyanto; and Deputy for Protocol, Press, and Media of the Presidential Secretariat Bey Machmudin.

The head of state is optimistic that the reconstruction of quake-affected buildings in Malang District would be commenced soon. To this end, the president will task the Public Works and People’s Housing Ministry with conducting repairs of the damaged public facilities at the earliest.

An earthquake of magnitude 6.1 shook Malang District, on April 10, 2021, causing substantial damage.

According to the Malang District Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), the quake affected 32 out of the 33 sub-districts in Malang.

A total of 641 public facilities were damaged, comprising 226 school buildings, 233 places of worship, 23 health facilities, and 159 other public facilities.

The quake also left four people dead and 110 others injured.
