One thousand workers, crew at Sunda Kelapa seaport inoculated: Jokowi

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Some one thousand individuals, comprising port workers and crew members as well as the residents living in proximity to the Sunda Kelapa Harbor, Jakarta, were vaccinated against COVID-19, according to President Joko Widodo (Jokowi).

“What is this vaccination for? To prevent the spread of COVID-19, especially since they are people with high interaction, both as crew members and those working for loading and unloading,” Jokowi, accompanied by Minister of Transportation Budi Karya Sumadi, Minister of Health Budi Gunadi Sadikin, and Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan, stated at the Sunda Kelapa Port here on Thursday.

The COVID-19 vaccine is deemed crucial for crew members and other port workers on account of their frequent interactions and high inter-island mobility. With administration of the vaccination, the spread of COVID-19 at ports is expected to be prevented, he remarked.

“Hence, this vaccination offers protection for workers at the Sunda Kelapa Port, and we are optimistic of preventing the spread of COVID-19,” he affirmed.

He expressed optimism that more number of people will receive the COVID-19 vaccine jabs in future.

Prior to visiting the Sunda Kelapa Port, President Jokowi also reviewed the COVID-19 vaccination campaign for a thousand people at the Kampung Rambutan Bus Terminal in East Jakarta and 1,500 people at the Tanjung Priok Port, North Jakarta.

Meanwhile, as of Wednesday (June 9), the government administered the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine to 18.7 million people and the second dose to 11.4 million people.

The total target of the national vaccination program reaches 181.5 million people, or some 70 percent of the total populace of Indonesia, in a bid to develop herd immunity.

The government targets the COVID-19 vaccination program to be completed in 2021.
