Bangkok: Anutin Charnvirakul, Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, attended the 32nd APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting in the Republic of Korea, engaging with global leaders to foster trade opportunities and mutual support. A significant agenda item included discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping regarding Thailand’s sale of 500,000 tons of rice to China.
According to Thai News Agency, Anutin departed from Don Mueang Military Airport 2, Bangkok, on October 29th, expressing optimism for Thailand’s economic benefits from the meeting. His itinerary included meetings with leaders from China, Canada, Korea, Brunei, and possibly Japan. Anutin anticipated valuable discussions with US President Donald J. Trump, suggesting potential collaborations on trade.
Inquiries about discussions on rare earths with China revealed that Anutin had previously met the Chinese Prime Minister at the ASEAN Summit without delving into this subject. However, upcoming talks with Xi Jinping would prioritize the rice deal, aiming to boost Thailand’s national income.
Addressing Thailand’s leadership in an anti-scam campaign, Anutin confirmed plans for an international meeting to combat scams, highlighting Thailand’s proactive stance against global threats.
Anutin also mentioned cooperation with India, involving the expedited return of nearly 500 Indian nationals from Mae Sot, following a request from India to alleviate burdens on Thailand. This collaboration has significantly advanced efforts to curb illicit activities.
The meeting in Korea serves as a platform for Anutin to emphasize Thailand’s economic potential and commitment to multilateralism, focusing on digital transformation, AI, demographic adaptation, and inclusive economic growth. Key sessions include discussions on regional connectivity, resilience, and future readiness through AI and sustainable growth.
Anutin will also address the APEC Business Leaders’ Summit, engage with the APEC Business Advisory Council, and hold bilateral discussions to strengthen ties across the Asia-Pacific region. The meeting aims to conclude with significant outcome documents, including the Gyeongju Declaration and initiatives on AI and demographic cooperation, reflecting the themes of Connect – Innovate – Prosper.
