Bangkok: “Big Tao” is emphasizing the importance of utilizing legal science to address the ongoing issues at Bang Khlan Temple following unsuccessful negotiation attempts. The transfer of the temple foundation’s ownership to outsiders linked to a former power group has further complicated the situation.
According to Thai News Agency, the investigation into Wat Bang Khlan has been advancing in the wake of allegations involving the disappearance of 30-40 million baht from the temple’s funds. Pol. Maj. Gen. Charoenkiert Pankaew, the Deputy Commissioner of the Central Investigation Bureau, revealed that the conflict at Bang Khlan has persisted for over ten years, with gradual improvements over time. An agreement had been made with the abbot to oversee the temple for a year to resolve the existing issues. However, unresolved matters persisted, prompting a verbal agreement to explore further steps. Following the abbot’s resignation, a new acting abbot was appointed, who belonged to the former power group, necessitating the involvement of neutral parties for resolution. Recently, a meeting with all stakeholders decided that the Deputy Abbot of Phichit Province would serve as acting abbot.
Pol. Maj. Gen. Charoonkiat highlighted that legal procedures were previously overlooked in maintaining temple peace. However, the current circumstances demand a legal approach to scrutinize all financial transactions. During this period, individuals were found purchasing amulets from the temple foundation, but the account name was linked to someone from the former power group. This led to obtaining a search warrant, unveiling a significant financial trail with numerous transactions. Funds were discovered in envelopes within the homes of individuals associated with the former power base, deemed unusual by authorities. Since the commencement of the investigation, the abbot has been absent. Over the past decade, Wat Bang Khlan reported a loss of 35 million baht from a total of over 100 million baht in funds, necessitating further investigation to clarify their purpose. Legal action will be pursued if explanations are not forthcoming.
Regarding the foundation involved in buying and selling amulets, Pol. Maj. Gen. Charoonkiat stated that detailed information is still being gathered, with amulet purchases ranging from thousands to tens of thousands of baht. This evidence aims to resolve the temple’s issues, with potential suspects being identified.
On the topic of the influential group controlling the temple, Pol. Maj. Gen. Charoonkiat explained that it consists of relatives and monks ordained within the temple, involved in managing various temple affairs. This group is distinct from the villagers associated with a former senator, who lack the authority to manage the temple.
Concerning the investigation of Wat Sothon Wararam Worawihan, a working group is being established, with the Chachoengsao Provincial Office of Buddhism expected to provide information this Wednesday.
When questioned about social media discussions regarding a dispute over a woman, Pol. Maj. Gen. Charoonkiat chose to keep the matter private, preferring to investigate thoroughly to avoid inaccuracies.
