Court Sentences Jeng Dokjik and Associates for Extortion Scheme Against Rice Department Director-General

Bangkok: The Central Criminal Court for Corruption and Misconduct Cases has delivered a verdict in a high-profile extortion case involving Mr. Srisuwan Janya, Mr. Jeng Dokjik, and five others accused of extorting money from the Director-General of the Rice Department. The court sentenced Mr. Jeng Dokjik to six years in prison, while Mr. Srisuwan and his associates received four-year sentences each.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Srisuwan Janya, who served as a petitioner, along with Mr. Yotsawarit Chuaklom, popularly known as Jeng Dokjik and a member of the Ruam Thai Sang Chart Party, attended the hearing to face charges of extorting money from the Director-General. Before the verdict, Mr. Srisuwan addressed the media, framing the case as politically motivated and asserting it aimed to prevent scrutiny of politicians and officials. His decade-long actions reportedly led to the dissolution of several political parties and ended careers of notable politicians.

Mr. Srisuwan maintained his innocence, emphasizing his commitment to proving his case due to the damage he incurred. Known for filing thousands of complaints and lawsuits on behalf of affected villagers nationwide, he highlighted that the case undermined public confidence. He expressed optimism that the court’s decision would allow him to resume his duties, relying solely on the 4,773-page indictment’s inconsistencies as his defense. He anticipated the case setting a precedent against future harassment by authorities.

Mr. Jeng Dokjik, who arrived before the scheduled time, abstained from media interaction and proceeded directly to the courtroom. The case dates back to January 12, 2024, when the Rice Department’s Director-General filed a complaint with the Anti-Corruption and Misconduct Division (ACDM) against a group demanding 1.5 million baht to avoid a corruption complaint. Subsequent investigations led to the arrest of all suspects.

The court identified misconduct by the defendants, supported by substantial evidence, including audio clips, images, chat messages, and banknote numbers matching those withdrawn by Mr. Natthakit Kongthip’s wife, Director-General of the Rice Department, on the incident day.

Following the court’s decision, the defendants sought bail and are expected to appeal the ruling.
