COVID-19 Cases Surge as School Term Begins in Thailand

Bangkok: The Department of Disease Control has expressed concerns over a rise in COVID-19 cases with the commencement of the new school term, fearing an increase in infections. The department’s spokespersons, Dr. Jurai Wongswat and Dr. Weerawat Manosutthi, highlighted the growing number of COVID-19 patients since the Songkran Festival and recommended monitoring symptoms and a five-day quarantine for those who are unwell.

According to Thai News Agency, the epidemic situation revealed a total of 211,717 COVID-19 cases from January 1 to May 27, 2025, with 51 reported deaths. The mortality rate stands at 0.08 percent per 100,000 population, with 78 percent of deaths occurring in individuals aged 60 and above who had pneumonia. The provinces most affected include Rayong, Bangkok, Chonburi, Phuket, and other tourist destinations. Post-Songkran outbreaks were identified in various groups, including prisons, educational institutions, military camps, and hospitals, totaling 669 cases. Though no change in the virus strain’s severity has been detected, its spread rate may have increased.

The start of the school term is contributing to the rise in patient numbers. To prevent further transmission, both students and school staff are urged to undergo health screenings. Individuals showing symptoms should consult a doctor and self-isolate for at least five days. If venturing outside is unavoidable, wearing a mask at all times is advised to curb the spread of the virus.
