Education Ministry to offer scholarships to talented athletes

Through the direction of President Jokowi (Joko Widodo) with the National Sports Grand Design, talent management in sports is becoming increasingly organized and well-managed.

Jakarta The Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology has informed that it is currently selecting students excelling at PON XX in Papua to offer them Talent Achievement scholarships.

“It is being coordinated with the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs and also universities for them to be considered for outstanding talent scholarships,” acting head of the ministry’s of Bureau of Cooperation and Public Relations Anang Ristanto informed here on Saturday.

The scholarship award is meant as an appreciation of students who excel in the national championship, Ristanto said.

Meanwhile, acting head of the ministry’s National Achievement Center Asep Sukmayadi said the ministry is carrying out selections of students at the high school, vocational, and college levels.

“Later, the consideration will be based on their achievements whether it is the national or international level and what medals they won, like gold, silver or bronze, to be awarded the talent achievement scholarships,” Sukmayadi informed.

The Talent Achievement Scholarship is part of the ministry’s Merdeka Belajar program (Freedom in Learning) Episode 10 policies, he said.

Scholarships will be awarded at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, he added.

The scholarship award is a collaboration between the Ministry of Education and the Finance Ministry’s Endowment Fund for Education (LPDP), he said.

It is also a part of the National Sports Grand Design, in which each ministry and institution has its own role, Sukmayadi explained.

“This is a good example of how sustainable talent coaching starts from the national sports competition. Through the direction of President Jokowi (Joko Widodo) with the National Sports Grand Design, talent management in sports is becoming increasingly organized and well-managed,” he remarked.

According to the ministry’s secretary general, Suharti, the ministry is honoring excellent students not only in the academic field but also in non-academic fields.

Meanwhile, UNJ (Jakarta State University) Rector Prof. Komarudin said his team has a policy of awarding scholarships to medalists of PON, the National Student Sports Week, SEA Games, Asian Games, and the Olympics.

UNJ already has a policy for awarding scholarships, especially at the undergraduate level (S1) for medalists, he explained.

The scholarship will be awarded to UNJ students, he informed. For example, PON and Olympics weightlifter Eko Yuli Irawan has been awarded the scholarship, he said.
