Former Olympic Boxer Somrak Khamsing Sentenced for Attempted Rape

Khon Kaen: The Khon Kaen Provincial Court sentenced former Olympic gold medalist boxer Somrak Khamsing to 2 years, 13 months, and 10 days in prison, alongside a compensation payment of 170,000 baht, for the attempted rape of a 17-year-old girl.

According to Thai News Agency, the court’s decision came after a thorough examination of evidence and testimony presented by the plaintiff, the public prosecutor, who charged Somrak and his close friend, Mr. Pichet Chinehantha, also known as ‘Peko’. They were accused of jointly abducting a minor over the age of 15 for indecent purposes. The charges included attempting to rape by using force and violence, and committing indecency against a person over the age of 15. The incident allegedly occurred on December 10, 2023, involving a 17-year-old girl whom Mr. Somrak met at an entertainment venue.

The court found the plaintiff’s evidence credible, noting the victim’s detailed testimony, which was consistent with the physical evidence of violence, including signs of force on the victim’s body. The court ruled out the defendant’s claim of consent, emphasizing that the victim’s presence did not imply consent, and no evidence supported any form of prostitution or benefit demand.

The initial sentence was 4 years and 8 months, but it was reduced by 1/3 due to the defendant’s cooperation during the trial, resulting in the final sentence of 2 years, 13 months, and 10 days. Additionally, Somrak was ordered to pay 50,000 baht to the victim’s relatives and 120,000 baht to the victim, with a 5 percent annual interest from the date of the incident. The case against the second defendant, Mr. Pichet, was dismissed.

Despite the verdict, Mr. Somrak remained optimistic, expressing his intention to continue fighting the charges. His lawyer, Mr. Itthisak Attakornwikrom, indicated that further examination of facts is necessary.
