Indonesia condemns use of ‘excessive force’ by Israel in Jenin

The Indonesian government has condemned the use of “excessive force” by Israeli security forces against Palestinians in Jenin.

“Indonesia strongly condemns the use of excessive force by Israeli security forces in Jenin, which has killed 9 Palestinian civilians,” said the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) in a tweet on its official Twitter account on Friday.

The Indonesian MoFA stressed that the brutal action by Israel will further complicate the attainment of peace in the Middle East.

Therefore, Indonesia has called on the international community and the United Nations to urge Israel to respect the rights of the Palestinian people, it said.

Earlier, at least 9 Palestinians were killed and 20 others left injured by the Israeli army in the occupied West Bank on Thursday, the Turkish news agency Anadolu reported, quoting Palestinian sources.

According to eyewitnesses, Israeli soldiers stormed the Jenin refugee camp, leading to clashes between dozens of Palestinians and the Israeli army.

The Israeli military operation in the Jenin camp was the largest since the Al-Aqsa Intifada in 2002.

Tensions have been running high across the West Bank in recent weeks amid repeated Israeli raids to detain “wanted Palestinians” or to demolish Palestinian homes.

The raids have sparked clashes with Palestinians, leading to several fatalities.
