Indonesia, US continue collaboration to support FoLU Net Sink 2030

Indonesia and the United States continue to establish close cooperation to reduce greenhouse gas emissions that is expected to support net absorption in the forestry and land use sector (FoLU Net Sink) by 2030.

Indonesia and the US have a longstanding history of cooperation in the environment and forestry sector, Sustainable Forest Management Director General at the Indonesian Forest and Environment Ministry Agus Justianto noted through a statement on Wednesday.

The latest cooperation agreement, signed in May 2022, concerns the support toward the FoLU Net Sink 2030.

“We expect to create stronger cooperation to support Indonesia’s FoLU Net Sink 2030 agenda,” he remarked at a dialogue at the COP-27 Indonesia Pavilion in Egypt on Tuesday local time.

Indonesia is committed to achieving the greenhouse gas absorption rate that is higher or equal to the emission in the FoLU sector in 2030, he explained.

Indonesia aims to achieve minus 140 million tons of CO2 equivalent emission rate in the sector.

The FoLU Net Sink 2030 agenda will support Indonesia’s greenhouse gas emission reduction described within the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) document.

The Indonesian government is optimistic of the target being achieved since the FoLU Net Sink agenda was designed based on the experience over the last seven years, Justianto explained.

The ministry has prepared several strategies comprising deforestation prevention, forest degradation reduction, peatland protection and restoration, and carbon absorption acceleration by increasing afforestation and reforestation.

Meanwhile, the US’ Lead for Partnership and Initiative Department at the Office of Global Change Christine Dragisic said that the US is pleased to cooperate with Indonesia to reduce carbon emissions through the FoLU Net Sink.

The US support to Indonesia throughout this time is channeled through various schemes, such as donation and Debt for Nature Swap, she explained.

The US also receives several benefits since it can learn about environment and forestry management while lending support to Indonesia, she remarked.
