Ban nong ya kaeo: Negotiations fail! Cambodian protesters storm the village of Nong Ya Kaew and dismantle barbed wire. Officials fire tear gas and rubber bullets to control the situation. At 3:53 PM, the Burapha Force received a report from riot control police in Sa Kaeo Province, stationed near the barbed wire fence in Nong Ya Kaeo Village, that 200 Cambodians, armed with sticks approximately 3 meters long, had entered the area to destroy the barbed wire that Thai officials had placed there. The officials warned the Cambodians not to destroy the barbed wire fence, but to no avail. Negotiations lasted about 30 minutes, but to no avail.
According to Thai News Agency, at 4:20 p.m., riot control officers had to use light to heavy crowd control measures, using tear gas to warn Cambodians who were destroying the barbed wire fence. However, the Cambodian side did not give up and continued to destroy the barbed wire fence. Riot control officers had to use rubber bullets, which they are still doing. Some Cambodians have retreated because of the tear gas.
A security source stated that after the Cambodian observer team (IOT) returned from the site, the Thai side instructed military personnel to rebuild the barbed wire fence as a precautionary measure. However, Cambodian forces brought in individuals to create unrest and assault officials. Thai police have been instructed to monitor the situation and take preventative measures. Initially, tear gas was used, and the situation is currently under control.
