Pickup truck hits road repair workers, 1 dead, 1 injured


A pickup truck crashed into a road repair worker, killing one and injuring another while he was trying to dismantle the ceiling for repairs under the Khlong Bang Phai BTS station in Bang Bua Thong District, Nonthaburi Province.

The accident occurred at 12:30 a.m. The front camera of the pickup truck that crashed captured the moment of the accident. The pickup truck was speeding and hit the traffic cones before crashing into two pickup trucks parked inside the barrier, resulting in one death and one injury.

After the incident, Bang Bua Thong Police Station, Nonthaburi Province, along with doctors on duty from the Institute of Forensic Medicine and Ruamkatanyu Foundation officers inspected a pickup truck accident involving road repair workers on Kanchanaphisek Road, inbound, heading to Taling Chan, under the Khlong Bang Phai BTS station in Bang Bua Thong District. At the scene, the body of Mr. Jitti, 24 years old, wearing a blue long-sleeved shirt and a reflective vest, was found lying dead next to the left
shoulder barrier. In addition, there was another injured person, Mr. Jirawat, 33 years old, who was taken to the hospital by rescue workers earlier.

From the inspection at the scene, 3 pickup trucks were found in a condition where they had crashed together and were blocking the road. The first was a bronze 4-door Isuzu pickup truck with the front right side damaged. Mr. Masamai, age 33, the driver, was standing at the scene waiting to give a statement to the officers. The second was a bronze 4-door Isuzu pickup truck with damage to the front and back. The third was a bronze-gold Toyota pickup truck with the back side damaged.

The driver, Mr. Masamai, was questioned and stated that he was driving back from work in Wang Noi District, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province, to his home in Nong Khaem. Along the way, he admitted that he did not see, possibly because his eyesight was poor, and he did not know what he had crashed into until the impact. After that, he felt as if his vision had changed. When he came to,
he saw the damage to several cars that had crashed into, with injuries and fatalities.

Mr. Nattaporn, 25, a relative of the deceased, said that he and his workers brought a cherry picker up to dismantle the ceiling under the BTS station for repairs. Before starting work, orange traffic cones and arrow lights were placed to block the two traffic lanes in the middle and right for a distance of about 500 meters, allowing cars to use only the left lane. Suddenly, the pickup truck came straight into the right lane at high speed, which was the blocked line, and hit the cones and the light sign before hitting two more pickup trucks belonging to the workers, causing damage and injuring Mr. Jitthi and fellow workers standing there.

Initially, the police took Mr. Masamai for questioning and to test for alcohol in his body. The deceased was handed over to the Ruamkatanyu Foundation to be sent to the Institute of Forensic Medicine for further autopsy.
