Police Chief Urges Pilots to Address Concerns Following Dual Helicopter Incidents

Bangkok: The national police chief has called upon pilots within the police aviation unit to reflect on existing issues after two helicopter crashes occurred within a single month. He clarified that 22 of the 71 helicopters are operational, countering claims on social media that only nine were fit for use. The chief assured the public that all helicopters undergo regular maintenance cycles and emphasized that pilots are never forced to fly if they lack confidence in their aircraft.

According to Thai News Agency, Pol. Gen. Kittirat Panphet, the national police chief, visited the Police Aviation Division to engage with pilots, gather information, and inspect the aircraft fleet. He expressed his intention to bolster morale and ensure pilots can take to the skies with confidence. Pol. Gen. Kittirat underscored the need for detailed discussions to ensure the safe operation of the division’s aircraft.

In response to chat messages allegedly sent by a deceased pilot, which mentioned mechanical issues, Pol. Gen. Kittirat stated that he would not speculate on their validity. He assigned Pol. Gen. Thatchai Pitaneelabut, the national police inspector, to investigate the claims thoroughly.

Regarding allegations of corruption in maintenance, Pol. Gen. Kittirat acknowledged the concerns and reassured that all issues are being investigated. He emphasized that any corruption discovered will be addressed decisively. He encouraged pilots to report any issues directly to him, ensuring transparency and accountability.

The investigation into a helicopter crash in Hua Hin District, Prachuap Khiri Khan Province, remains ongoing, with black boxes sent to the manufacturer in Canada for analysis. Pol. Gen. Kittirat clarified that the helicopter underwent routine maintenance checks and was returning from a mission when the accident happened.

The Royal Thai Police operates a fleet of 11 aircraft and 71 helicopters, with 22 helicopters currently active. Pol. Gen. Kittirat outlined plans to replace older helicopters starting in 2027. He also mentioned that while the maintenance budget is an initial estimate, it may require adjustments to keep aircraft operational.

Pol. Gen. Kittirat affirmed pilots’ rights to refuse missions if they lack confidence in the aircraft’s safety. He stressed the importance of thorough inspections and confidence in equipment before undertaking missions.

Following the crashes, all aircraft within the Police Aviation Division have been temporarily grounded for inspections. Pol. Gen. Kittirat assured that inspections, involving experts and relevant agencies, will be expedited, and any necessary repairs will be minor.

Despite the recent incidents, Pol. Gen. Kittirat expressed his confidence in the safety of the aircraft, stating his willingness to use them for upcoming missions. He reiterated his commitment to addressing any issues of corruption or mismanagement within the division.
