Police’s traffic control scheme readied for welcoming national team

Jakarta (ANTARA) – The Greater Jakarta Police has prepared a traffic control scheme on several road sections on Friday (May 19) for the crowd welcoming home the national football team that bagged gold in the Cambodian SEA Games.”Of course, there will be a traffic scheme (in place), especially on the Sudirman-Thamrin route. Tomorrow is a working day, but today is a holiday, so hopefully, (the number of) car riders will decrease,” Traffic Director of the Greater Jakarta Police, Senior Commissioner Latif Usman, said here on Thursday. Usman said he is also awaiting information on which routes would be taken by the Indonesian national football team players. “We will look at the situation for the exact location of the traffic scheme tomorrow. We have prepared the security unit,” he explained. He cited information that the national football team will either head to the Merdeka Palace or the Gelora Bung Karno (GBK) sports complex. Both are in the Central Jakarta area. “We are still making sure (regarding the exact route),” he said. Usman said his side will deploy several traffic police personnel at points prone to congestion. “Of course, not only Sudirman-Thamrin, but we will also start (applying the) traffic control (scheme) from Kuningan to the SCBD area, and after that from Slipi, Palmerah, and also from Fatmawati,” he explained. He also urged motorists to avoid the Sudirman-Thamrin route on Friday so as not to increase traffic congestion. The Indonesia U-22 national team ended a 32-year wait for a gold medal owing to a 5-2 victory over Thailand in the final match at the National Stadium, Phnom Penh, Tuesday night (May 17). The young players, called the Garuda Muda, finally clinched a win after a challenging match. After it led 2-0 in the first half, Thailand was able to catch up to 2-2 in the last minutes of the standard duration. However, Indonesia scored three goals in the extra time and secured a gold. Overall, the Indonesian contingent won third place in the games, with 87 gold, 80 silver, and 109 bronze medals. Related news: SEA Games: Indonesia achieves target of 69 gold medals
