PARLIAMENT: Mrs. Pratum Wongswat, Vice Chairwoman of the Senate Committee on Tourism and Sports, is championing the Clean Beach Act, aiming to transform Pattaya’s beaches into a global model of cleanliness. The initiative follows feedback from local tourists and residents, highlighting significant waste issues affecting the area’s environment, tourism, and economy.
According to Thai News Agency, Mrs. Wongswat received a formal proposal from Pattaya representatives, including Mr. Thammasathorn Khuenphet and Mr. Gerry Thomas Rasmus, addressing the urgent need to tackle beach pollution. The concerns focus on the proliferation of waste, such as plastic and general litter, that mars the natural beauty of Pattaya’s beaches, deterring tourists and impacting the city’s reputation and marine ecosystem.
The proposal suggests creating a dedicated unit for regular beach cleanups and launching educational campaigns to encourage both residents and tourists to maintain beach cleanliness. It also calls for stricter enforce
ment of litter laws and increased penalties for offenders. Additionally, the proposal emphasizes the importance of securing the necessary budget and resources to support beach restoration and implement a sustainable waste management system.
Mrs. Wongswat expressed gratitude towards the business operators and tourist representatives for their proactive stance on preserving Pattaya’s status as a premier tourist destination. She assured that the feedback would be taken to the Tourism Committee for further deliberation and reaffirmed her commitment to advancing the Clean Beach Act to meet international standards.
