Jakarta (ANTARA) – United States (US) Ambassador to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Yohannes Abraham said US Vice President Kamala Harris’ visit to Jakarta for the 43rd ASEAN Summit was to expand the US’ regional involvement.”This visit is to continue the unprecedented expansion of US involvement in ASEAN,” Abraham stated in a special interview with ANTARA here on Friday. The ambassador affirmed that the visit was an opportunity for the US to reaffirm its commitment to ASEAN centrality. The visit also aims to develop joint efforts that have been carried out by the US and ASEAN. “I think what you are going to hear from the vice president is a clear articulation not only of how central ASEAN is to us, but of our positive and affirmative agenda for the region and the things and areas where we can work together more closely,” he stated. The ambassador remarked that the US vice president will also spotlight the importance of cooperation to ensure inclusive economic growth for society and joint efforts to protect the environment. In addition, Harris will also speak about addressing health security challenges and efforts to realize the vision for the region that is consistent with the Indo-Pacific strategy and ASEAN centrality. “Hence, the most important reason for the visit is as a testament and affirmation of our commitment to ASEAN centrality,” the ambassador stated.
