Vietnam Commits to Active Role in ASEAN-US Defense Cooperation

Indonesia - Vietnam's Minister of National Defence, General Phan Van Giang, affirmed Vietnam's commitment to playing an active role in ASEAN-US cooperation, particularly within the ASEAN Defence Ministers' Meeting Plus (ADMM+) framework.

According to Vietnam News Agency , Speaking at the ASEAN-US Defence Ministers' Informal Meeting, Giang lauded the US's support for ASEAN's central role and its comprehensive cooperation with the region. He emphasized the need for collective efforts to address traditional and non-traditional security challenges. US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin underscored the significance of the ADMM as a key regional security mechanism and expressed hopes for stronger defence cooperation, including joint exercises and maritime security initiatives. On the sidelines, Giang and Austin discussed bilateral defence cooperation, focusing on addressing war consequences and humanitarian aid. Giang invited US defence industry businesses to participate in Vietnam's second International Defence Expo in late 2024.
