2022 Presidential Cup a platform to develop esports athletes: KSP

Chief of the Presidential Staff Office (KSP) Moeldoko expects that the 2022 Esports President’s Cup (PPE) would become a platform for developing the career of Indonesian esports athletes until they reach the international stage.

According to Moeldoko, ever since the PPE was held in 2019, potential esports athletes continue to emerge and have a good career.

These talents will continue to be sought after and trained, so that they can be successful and promote Indonesia in the future, he noted during the 2022 PPE press conference here on Thursday.

Esports, or electronic sports, is a competition in playing games between professional players. The 2022 PPE became a form of the government’s commitment in developing the career of national esports athletes, he said through a statement.

Organizing the PPE has proven to have a domino effect for advancement of the national game industry and ecosystem, particularly esports. This is proven by the appearance of two local games featured in the 2021 PPE.

According to Statista’s research result, the estimated revenue from games until the end of 2022 was recorded at Rp14 billion, with a growth of 9.14 percent, Moeldoko stated.

Indonesia currently ranks 12th in the global game market. Meanwhile, in Southeast Asia, Indonesia ranks first, with gamers constituting 43 percent of the Southeast Asian market share.

“With this opportunity, we expect that Indonesia can be the host in its own country, and the game industry can support the economy and create jobs for millennials,” he remarked.

He also expects that the 2022 PPE would not just be a competition but also provide positive impacts on Indonesia’s younger generation in accordance with the aspirations of President Joko Widodo and Vice President Ma’ruf Amin.

“Through this PPE, the younger generation will not just be playing games but also become a creative and innovative generation of Indonesia with good character,” he stated.

The 2022 Esports President’s Cup (PPE) is an esports tournament held annually since 2019. With the theme “Esports for the Country,” the 2022 PPE kick off will be held on August 10.

The event will be held in a hybrid format, with 142 athletes competing in seven games, two of which are domestic games: Lokapala and Battle of Satria Dewa.

The total prize pool provided stood at Rp2 billion.

UK expected to increase green investment in ASEAN: Marsudi

Given its green technology capability, the United Kingdom is expected to increase investment in low carbon technology in the ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) region, Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi has said.

She made the remarks during the ASEAN-United Kingdom Ministerial Meeting held in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, on Thursday.

“ASEAN has strong commitment to achieving the net-zero target and developing climate-resilient infrastructures. To achieve this vision, green investment of US$3 trillion will be needed until 2030,” she said in a written statement released by the Indonesian Foreign Ministry.

The signing of a cooperation agreement on a technical assistance and sustainable infrastructure fund — UK-ASEAN Catalytic Green Finance Facility Trust Fund — is a good starting step to promote partnership in the green economy, she added.

During the meeting, Marsudi also stressed the significance of ASEAN and the UK contributing to peace and stability.

What is happening in Ukraine can occur elsewhere in the world, she pointed out.

“What is happening in Ukraine reflects the absence of trust or the existence of prolonged distrust. A lot of lessons can be taken from this situation,” she said.

She also underscored the importance of ASEAN and the UK prioritizing the spirit of collaboration.

Multilateral cooperation must serve as a building block for creating stability and peace, instead of disintegration.

The ASEAN-UK Ministerial Meeting was the first of its kind after the UK was inducted as an ASEAN dialogue partner in 2021.

The meeting adopted an action plan for following up on the ASEAN-UK partnership during the 2022–2026 period, which, among other things, contains an agreement to enhance cooperation in the creative economy, including strengthening entrepreneurship and developing the market.
