36 injured in Kanjuruhan stampede still hospitalized: police

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Thirty six people injured in the crowd crush at Kanjuruhan Stadium, Malang, West Java, are still hospitalized, Head of the Public Relations Division of the National Police Inspector General Dedi Prasetyo informed on Saturday.

The number of hospitalized has shown a decline compared to 59 on Tuesday (October 4, 2022).

“Report on Saturday informs that there are 36 people still hospitalized,” he informed on Saturday.

The 36 injured victims are being treated at nine hospitals. They include 14 people at RSSA (five in the ICU and nine in the treatment room), six at Kanjuruhan Hospital (one in the ICU and five in the treatment room), three at RSB Hasta Brata, four at Waya Husana Hospital, and one at the HCU room of Aisyiyah Islamic Hospital, he expounded.

They further include two people at RST Soepraoen, one person at Unisma Hospital, two people at Godang Legi Hospital, and three people at Hermina Hospital.

Based on the data collected by the DVI Police Team and related agencies from hospitals and data validations, 574 people were injured in the tragedy overall. The number reflected an increase of 467 compared to data collected on October 4.

Of the 574 injured, 506 suffered mild injuries, 45 sustained moderate injuries, and 23 had severe injuries. Meanwhile, the death toll remained unchanged at 131.

“All data has been confirmed with the director of the hospital, as a medical service and forensic department,” Prasetyo said.

The police have named six suspects in connection with the stampede that broke out at Kanjuruhan Stadium on October 1.

Three suspects are civilians: LIB (PT Liga Indonesia Baru) president director Ahmad Hadian Lukita, chairman of the Arema Malang executive committee, Abdul Haris, and security officer steward Suko Sutrisno. The three allegedly violated the provisions of Article 359 and/or Article 360 and/or Article 103 paragraph (1) in conjunction with Article 52 of Law Number 11 of 2022 concerning Sports.

The three remaining suspects are from the police, namely the operation head of Malang Police, Commissioner Wahyu Setyo Pranoto; head of the on-alert-police unit of Malang Police, Adjunct Commissioner Bambang Sidik Achmadi; and company command of the East Java Police Mobile Brigade, Adjunct Commissioner Hasdarman. They allegedly violated the provisions of Article 359 and/or Article 360 of the Criminal Code. If convicted, they could face a maximum sentence of five years in prison.

In addition, there are 20 police personnel who are suspected of being involved in ethical violations related to the event that unfolded at Kanjuruhan Stadium.

On October 1, chaos broke out at the stadium after a match between Arema FC and Persebaya Surabaya ended with a final score of 2-3. Arema FC’s defeat led to several supporters storming the pitch.

The chaos grew as several flares were thrown, including other objects. Joint security officers from the police and the Indonesian Defense Force (TNI) tried to dispel supporters by firing tear gas, triggering a stampede that killed 131 people.
