Maha Sarakham, The weather is cool and I want to eat Khao Jee. But if you go to Maha Sarakham, you have to hurry. There are so many customers that you have to queue. Sales are more than 1,000 sticks per day.

At the agricultural market, Phloen Suksa Intersection, Maha Sarakham Province, there is a stall selling a popular Isaan food, ‘Khao Jee’, priced at only 5 baht. It is dipped in duck eggs and grilled over a low heat until it turns a beautiful pale yellow. It is eaten with grilled dried meat and fermented fish paste. It is so delicious that you will get addicted to it. It sells like hotcakes, with more than 1,000 skewers per day, so much so that people have to give out queue cards.

Mr. Sompong, 60 years old, owner of Khao Jee Yai Phon shop, said that his wife came up with the recipe for Khao Jee here herself. She has been selling it for almost 10 years and sells it for only 5 baht per stick. They use Khao Wong sticky rice from Kalasin province because when steamed it is fragrant, soft and doesn’t stick t
o your hands. Each day, they use about 30 kilograms of rice and 12 trays of free-range duck eggs. They separate the egg yolks and season them according to his wife’s recipe. They sell the egg whites to patients who come to buy them at home.

The shop opens every day at around 3 pm. They sell until they run out. As for the sticky rice preparation technique, the shop soaks the rice in the evening and then steams it with firewood in the morning, which makes the rice smell good. When the egg yolk is dipped in and grilled over a low heat, it becomes even more delicious. It is chewy and soft on the tongue. Customers are addicted. Some days, they grill it so fast that they can barely keep up.
