Bangkok: Airports of Thailand Public Company Limited (AOT) is set to implement a state-of-the-art biometric identification system across six major airports to streamline passenger processing and elevate travel convenience. The new system, which will be operational for domestic passengers starting November 1, 2024, and for international passengers from December 1, 2024, is expected to boost passenger numbers significantly over the coming fiscal years.
According to Thai News Agency, Dr. Keerati Kitimanawat, AOT’s President, announced the rollout of the Automated Biometric Identification System, which utilizes facial recognition technology to expedite check-in and boarding processes. This initiative is part of AOT’s strategy to enhance passenger experience and reduce waiting times at various service points across Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueang, Chiang Mai, Mae Fah Luang Chiang Rai, Phuket, and Hat Yai airports. The system requires passengers to consent to the use of their personal identity data, which will be stored
in the form of a Token for a single trip.
The biometric system offers two registration methods for passengers: at the check-in counter with airline staff assistance or via self-service check-in machines. Once registered, passengers will enjoy streamlined transitions through security checkpoints and boarding gates without the need to present passports and boarding passes repeatedly. Dr. Keerati emphasized that the system is designed to allow passengers more leisure time for shopping and dining within the airports.
In fiscal year 2024, AOT’s six airports witnessed a 19.22% increase in passenger traffic, totaling 119.29 million. This growth includes a 34.82% rise in international passengers and a modest 1.01% increase in domestic travelers. Flight operations also saw a 14.5% uptick, with significant growth in international flights. The top nationalities of passengers were from China, India, South Korea, Russia, and Japan.
Looking ahead, AOT projects a continued increase in air traffic for fiscal year 2025, wi
th passenger numbers expected to reach nearly 130 million, marking an 8.95% growth. The anticipated rise includes an uptick in both international and domestic flights, with Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang airports leading in passenger volume increases. The top international routes to Thailand are forecasted to be from China, Malaysia, India, Singapore, and Hong Kong.
Dr. Keerati reiterated AOT’s commitment to developing modern airport facilities that align with its vision of being a world-class airport operator, aiming to create an impressive and seamless travel experience for all airport users.
