Bangkok: The Pollution Control Department has issued a warning for Bangkok and its surrounding areas to prepare for high levels of PM 2.5 dust on October 24-25. The alert comes as cold winds from China create stagnant air conditions over the Northeast and Central regions of Thailand, hindering the dispersion of dust particles.
According to Thai News Agency, the latest reports from the Pollution Control Department, in collaboration with the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, indicate that while the overall PM 2.5 levels across the country remain within standard limits, certain areas in Bangkok, particularly Khlong San, have recorded levels between 12.0-38.2 micrograms per cubic meter, exceeding safe standards. The department forecasts that the high air pressure, resulting in weak wind speeds, will likely maintain elevated dust levels until October 25.
In response to the situation, the Bangkok administration has developed a comprehensive dust reduction plan targeting all 50 districts, to be implemented star
ting October 24. Mr. Ekwaranyu Amrapal, a spokesman for Bangkok, outlined several measures including the inspection of vehicles for emissions, traffic management to minimize congestion, public advisories on engine maintenance, and regulation of industrial emissions. Additionally, the plan involves efforts to control open burning and encourage religious establishments to refrain from lighting incense.
Residents are advised to limit outdoor activities and use personal protective equipment when necessary. The public is encouraged to stay informed about pollution levels through the AIRBKK application and report pollution sources via the Traffy Fondue application. The department anticipates that rainfall expected between October 25-26 may help alleviate the dust situation.
