Bangkok: “Bhumtham” has addressed the recent decision to reclassify poker as a non-gambling activity to support international sports competitions, asserting that it is not a precursor to the Entertainment Complex Act. He expressed frustration over the media’s inquiry regarding the lack of public notification, emphasizing that it was a management issue that could be clarified.
According to Thai News Agency, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, Mr. Phumtham Wechayachai, who is currently acting as Prime Minister, explained the decision to revoke the announcement that sanctioned poker gambling amidst criticism over its timing and relevance. He emphasized that poker has been recognized under the law since 1958, and after more than six decades, a reassessment was necessary. The latest announcement redefines poker as an international sport rather than a gambling activity, as proposed by the Ministry of Tourism and Sports. Although classified as Category B gambling under the Gambling Act, the law will undergo repeal and reinstatement processes to facilitate international sporting events.
Mr. Phumtham responded to questions about the need for public disclosure prior to such decisions, stating, “Wow, saying that like everything else, we have to inform the public first before making a decision. This is a management matter, and one we can clarify. There shouldn’t be any problems.”
Regarding concerns that this change might lead to the Entertainment Complex Act, Mr. Phumtham assured that the two matters are unrelated.
