Bangkok: “Bhumtham” expressed optimism about the results of the US tariff negotiations, anticipating a favorable outcome as US President Donald Trump has shown satisfaction and confidence in Thailand’s efforts and pledged to manage the situation effectively.
According to Thai News Agency, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai, commented on the US’s decision to lower tariffs on Thailand. This decision follows the US’s involvement in negotiations concerning the Thai-Cambodian issue. The revised tariffs are set to take effect tomorrow. Phumtham acknowledged a lack of detailed information regarding the negotiations led by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Pichai Chunhavajira, but confirmed ongoing communication between parties.
Phumtham shared that following successful talks with Cambodia in Malaysia, US President Donald Trump personally called him at around 10 p.m. upon his return. Trump extended his appreciation and congratulations to Thailand, acknowledging its appropriate response to the situation. During their conversation, they also touched upon tariffs and the US’s intentions. Trump conveyed his satisfaction and confidence in Thailand’s ability to manage the tariffs effectively. He also indicated a desire to visit Thailand, noting its rich culture, and described the policies discussed as positive.
Phumtham concluded by expressing his belief that the discussions and negotiations, particularly those involving Pichai, would yield beneficial results for Thailand.
