Jakarta, Indonesia – Global infrastructure solutions leader Black & Veatch has completed a feasibility study for Augustus Global Investment (AGI) on producing green hydrogen in Indonesia. This study is a significant step towards utilizing Indonesia’s renewable energy resources for hydrogen production.
According to Antara News Agency, the study focused on generating green hydrogen using electrolyzers powered by renewable energy supplied from the grid. The analysis included plant configuration, technology options, and cost estimates for hydrogen generation and storage. The study concluded that the project is both technically and economically viable and could play a crucial role in Indonesia’s energy transition.
Narsingh Chaudhary, President of Black & Veatch’s Asia Pacific and India operations, highlighted Indonesia’s abundant geothermal energy and other renewable resources as key drivers for the project’s potential success. He emphasized the project’s role in fostering a hydrogen economy in Indonesia over the next decade.
The proposed green hydrogen production plant is planned for the Arun Lhokseumawe Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Aceh province. The facility is expected to produce 98.5 tons of hydrogen per day and have a capacity of 300 megawatts. This initiative aligns with Indonesia’s carbon neutrality goals, which include developing large-scale renewable energy projects focusing on solar, hydropower, geothermal energy, and hydrogen.
Fadi Krikor, CEO of AGI, a Germany-based firm specializing in infrastructure and energy investments, expressed excitement about investing in Indonesia’s clean energy transition. The project’s development is estimated to cost around USD 500 million.
Black & Veatch’s involvement in green hydrogen extends globally, including nearly doubling the world’s green hydrogen production capacity through 245 MW of electrolysis projects. Notably, the company is the engineering, procurement, and construction provider for the Advanced Clean Energy Storage facility in Delta, Utah, USA, which will be among the largest industrial green hydrogen production and storage facilities in the world.
At the upcoming Enlit Asia 2023, Chaudhary is set to present a roadmap for achieving net-zero emissions in Southeast Asia’s energy systems, further emphasizing the region’s commitment to sustainable energy solutions.
