BNC lauds OJK regulations on digital banking products

Publicly-listed digital bank PT Bank Neo Commerce (BNC) has lauded two new regulations issued by the Financial Services Authority (OJK) to define online banking and streamline the publication of new banking products.

“This is a positive sign from the regulator that supports the creation of digital banking that is healthy, safe, innovative, and supports financial inclusion penetration at the national level,” BNC primary director Tjandra Gunawan said in a statement released here on Monday.

Last week, OJK published two new regulations — OJK Regulation (POJK) No 12/POJK.03/2021 regarding Commercial Bank and POJK No 13/POJK.03/2021 regarding the Publication of Commercial Bank’s Products, he noted.

POJK No.12 can serve as the foundation for the definition and operation of digital banks, Gunawan said. Meanwhile, POJK No. 13 will streamline licensing and regulation, which will facilitate digital banks to create innovative products or services, he added.

“With these two regulations, Bank Neo Commerce will be more driven to innovate and provide end-to-end digital banking services as well as products with the full support of the regulator,” he remarked.

In POJK No. 12, the OJK has defined a digital bank as a bank that is currently in the process of digitizing its products and services, or a new bank offering the full suite of digital banking services from its inception, he said.

OJK, as a regulator of the financial service industry, has also asserted that there has been no dichotomization between banks offering digital services and digital banks that have emerged as a result of the transformation of incumbent banks, or digital banks formed through the creation of new banks, he added.

Meanwhile, the OJK has streamlined the licensing of new banking products through POJK No.13, which emphasizes a risk-based approach and product clarification simplification, Gunawan said.

The acceleration of bank products’ licensing process is also to be done from the operator’s side, through piloting reviews and instant approvals, to drive the development of banking products and service innovation, he added.
