BNPB deploys health team to help handle Pakistan’s flood victims

The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) Head Lieutenant General Suharyanto symbolically deployed health workers that will provide humanitarian support to Pakistan that has been hit by flash floods due to monsoon rains since June 2022.

The agency deployed 29 health personnel from the pentahelix component comprising 10 from the Indonesia Defense Forces (TNI), six personnel from the National Police, two health workers from Andalas University, six personnel from MDMC, and five health personnel from the Indonesian Ministry of Health.

Suharyanto symbolically deployed the health workers by attaching vests to representatives of each personnel at the Sutopo Purwonugroho Hall here, Thursday.

The medical personnel’s support is a follow up to President Joko Widodo’s (Jokowi’s) directive after sending humanitarian aid to the Pakistani government that contains logistics, equipment, and funds worth US$1 million on September 27.

“Today, I am deploying the medical team, as a form of our humanitarian aid to Pakistan. This is a follow-up to President Jokowi’s directive to send social assistance to Pakistan. On September 27, two planes were dispatched carrying the necessary logistics for refugees in Pakistan,” Suharyanto remarked.

According to the agency head, assistance, in the form of the health team, was also sent upon the direct request of the Pakistani Government by the Indonesian Government through President Jokowi.

“This health team will be on duty for a full month in Karachi, as the worst affected area,” he remarked.

As planned, the health team will depart aboard the Garuda Indonesia aircraft from Halim Perdanakusuma Air Base on Thursday. From Jakarta, the health team will land and work in Karachi, the capital city of Sindh Province, as the worst affected area.

“Why in Karachi? (It is) because the worst affected area is Sindh Province,” he stated.
