Burma helps vulnerable groups affected by floods at Maejo University


“Warawut” sends a team of the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security to survey and help vulnerable groups and people affected by floods at Maejo University, and to monitor risk areas. He pointed out that the hotline 1300 is available 24 hours a day.

On September 17, 2024, Mr. Varawut Silpa-archa, Minister of Social Development and Human Security (MSDHS), revealed that he had received a report from the MSDHS Operations Center, which is responsible for supervising, monitoring, coordinating, collecting flood situation data and information from all sectors of the network, and planning assistance for vulnerable groups, including the affected people in the short, medium, and long term, with Mr. Anukul Peedkaew, Permanent Secretary of the MSDHS, as an advisor and Mr. Chokchai Wichianchaiya, Deputy Permanent Secretary of the MSDHS, as the center director, regarding the flood incident in Mae Ka Subdistrict, Mueang Phayao District, Phayao Province due to flash floods in the early morning of September 17, 2
024, causing water in the stream in front of Phayao University to overflow the banks and flood the village and dormitory, causing damage to dormitories, vehicles, motorcycles, cars, and household items, electrical appliances, computers, notebooks, iPads, clothes, and personal items.

Mr. Warawut said that for assistance at this time, the University of Phayao has opened a registration point for those affected by the flood in order to screen the problems and the injured initially. There are also requests to stay at the Phayao University Shelter and one injured person has been sent for treatment at the University of Phayao Hospital. The University of Phayao has set up a shelter which is a dormitory on the university campus with 2 buildings and approximately 200 beds. There are already a number of people who have requested to stay.

As for the only MSDHS unit in Phayao Province, it has provided 150 packs of drinking water, shoes, and clothing to the victims, as well as surveyed the vulnerable groups affected by t
he disaster. It has issued warnings to help monitor and prepare for evacuation from the risk area. Initially, it was found that no vulnerable groups were affected because the affected people were approximately 9 dormitory operators, and there were 228 students in the dormitories.
