Ubon Ratchathani: Cambodian soldiers have reportedly dug a 650-meter long trench known as a ‘Kulet’ from the Sattaban tree to the Lao intersection, a site of recent clashes with Thai soldiers. This development has heightened tensions at the border area in Ubon Ratchathani Province, where both nations have laid territorial claims.
According to Thai News Agency, the incident at Chong Bok on May 28, 2015, involved a confrontation following the discovery of the trench, which was seen as a violation of the MOU 2000 agreement for the second time. Thai soldiers attempted to negotiate with their Cambodian counterparts, urging them to vacate the disputed area. However, the Cambodian soldiers reportedly opened fire, leading to a skirmish between the two forces.
Currently, discussions are underway between military leaders from both sides to resolve the situation peacefully. The Thai military has reaffirmed its stance, demanding that Cambodian forces withdraw from the contested region to uphold the terms of the bilateral agreement.
