“Chaturon” remembers October 6, fights for democracy in the country

Chaturon” commemorates 6 October, asks to use democratic ideology – anti-dictatorship to fight for the country to be democratic because the constitution is still complicated.

Chaturon Chaisang, Pheu Thai Party-list MP and October person, recalled the October 6 incident at the 48th anniversary of October 6, 1976 in 2024. He said that he was assigned to speak on the topic ‘Are October people dead yet?’, which was difficult but an honor to speak. He personally believed that the October 6 incident was not only an event that severely damaged and lost Thammasat University, but also affected students and people who fought all over the country. The incident was intentionally continuous and led to a coup to seize power, destroy democracy, and lead Thai society to a dictatorship again. Meanwhile, the October 14 incident was meaningful because the people rose up to fight against the dictatorship and demanded democracy, which was able to change the country. It showed an atmosphere of freedom where people had equal righ
ts, voices, and freedom to demand and fight for a good society.

Mr. Chaturon said that after the incident, the October people and students ended since leaving the forest. There were many differences, which is normal, especially in terms of different ideas, because the October people opposed dictatorship, but some of them supported dictatorship.

‘We should pay attention to the October ideology, which is meaningful and valuable because Thai society is not yet democratic. We have been through two coups and those in power are still there. This ideology is still meaningful and useful, but is it enough for the current complex society? We asked for a constitution on October 14, but the current constitution is complicated and undemocratic, and has the most self-resistance. The democratic ideology and the anti-dictatorship ideology are still useful, but if we are going to use them, we must understand that we have been defeated, but the ideology is meaningful because democracy is something that is consistent with soc
ial development, and sometimes it takes a long time for many countries to become democratic,’ said Mr. Chaturon.

Mr. Chaturon added that to commemorate the October 6th incident, we must study and understand the October ideology. He personally believes that the lessons and experiences of the October people should be useful to bring both success and failure, both victories and defeats, to be useful for use in the fight to make the country democratic in the future.
