Chiang Mai residents are suffering greatly as garbage floating in with the floodwaters piles up alleys, blocking entrances and exits to homes and starting to rot. They are calling on officials to quickly clean it up.

Villagers in Soi 9, Chiang Mai-Lamphun Road, Nong Hoi Subdistrict, Mueang Chiang Mai District are suffering greatly from the large amount of garbage, including garbage, mattresses, furniture, and household items that have floated in with the flood waters, piled up all over the alley, blocking the entrances and exits to their homes, and starting to emit a foul smell throughout the area.

The owner of the house at the end of the alley said that the first flood on September 26 left a lot of garbage behind. After the water receded, the villagers piled it up at the mouth of the alley, waiting for the municipality officials to come and collect it. However, before they could come and collect it, the second flood since October 3 swept all the garbage into the house at the end of the alley, which was a
dead end. In addition to the original garbage, there was also new garbage from the flood that floated in with the water. Recently, the water receded, causing a lot of garbage to pile up all over the alley. He wants the relevant agencies to come and help remove the garbage and make way for people in the alley to enter and exit. Right now, the villagers are throwing their garbage along the side of the road in many places because they don’t know where to throw it. He wants them to take action quickly before the garbage rots throughout the community.

This flood is worse than any we have ever experienced. My house is in a flood-prone lowland area. Previously, I built an emergency storage room and 2-meter-high scaffolding to store my belongings and to provide a safe area to escape the flood. However, this year’s flood water level rose to 1.8 meters, causing the belongings that I had moved to a safe house to be submerged.
