The National Children’s Day on July 23 must serve as a momentum for all parties to improve the welfare of children by fulfilling their rights, Speaker of the House of Representatives (DPR), Puan Maharani, has said.
“The fulfillment of children’s rights will become a guarantee for Indonesia’s future. The 2022 National Children’s Day must become a momentum to improve children’s welfare,” Maharani said in a statement issued here on Friday.
The state must ensure that Indonesian children enjoy their rights, starting from the right to a family environment and alternative care, basic health and welfare, education, leisure time and cultural activities, and special protection for children, she added.
The 1945 Constitution regulates the provision of protection and guarantees of human rights, including the right to obtain welfare for children, she noted.
To realize them, the DPR has initiated the Maternal and Child Welfare Bill (RUU KIA), she said.
“RUU KIA was initiated to create superior human resources that will make Indonesia move forward,” she remarked.
Through the bill, the state is obliged to ensure the welfare of mothers and children. By safeguarding the welfare of mothers, the state can also secure the welfare of children as the nation’s next generation.
“RUU KIA aims to create a sense of security and peace for mothers and children, including improving the quality of life for mothers and children to achieve physical and spiritual well-being,” Maharani said.
The House Speaker noted that RUU KIA would guarantee efforts to respect, promote, protect, and fulfill the rights of mothers and children as well as protect mothers and children from acts of violence, neglect, all discriminatory acts, and other human rights violations.
She invited the people to always provide protection to children, including by supporting RUU KIA, which has become a DPR initiative bill.
