Constellation Thailand Develops Innovative Low-Carbon Materials

Bangkok: Polystyrene plastic pellets from factories belonging to the Dow Thailand Group (Dow), a joint venture with SCGC, have been certified with the Gold level Carbon Footprint Product (CFP) label from the Thailand Greenhouse Gas Management Organization (TGO). Mr. Ekasit Laknanitiphan, Executive Vice President of Joint Ventures, Dow Thailand Group, highlighted the significance of this certification. According to Thai News Agency, in addition to receiving the Carbon Footprint Label, these polystyrene plastic pellets can be mixed with up to 50% recycled plastic pellets without compromising quality. They are versatile and can be used in industries ranging from electrical appliances, food packaging, children's toys, to medical devices, presenting a sustainable solution for the future. Mr. Laknanitiphan believes that their diverse properties and cost-effectiveness will meet the needs of both manufacturers and consumers. With a production capacity exceeding 150,000 tons annually at the SCGC-Dow joint venture's p lant in Rayong Province, these materials are certified by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for direct food contact, making them suitable for use in various sectors, including interior decoration materials like moldings and door trims. A comparative study on recycling hazardous materials from incineration and greenhouse gases revealed that recycling HIPS (High Impact Polystyrene) can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 61.6-84.3% more than recycling ABS. This significant reduction indicates the environmental benefits of adopting innovative recycling practices in the industry.
