Constitutional Court Demands NACC Clarification on Thaksin-Pheu Thai Allegations

BANGKOK: The Constitutional Court has mandated the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) to provide a detailed explanation within 15 days regarding its actions and evidence collection in a case involving former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra and the Pheu Thai Party. The case, filed by Thirayuth Suwannakasorn, accuses Thaksin of exerting undue influence over the party, allegedly attempting to undermine the democratic regime with the King as head of state.

According to Thai News Agency, the court’s directive is part of a broader investigation into allegations that Thaksin, alongside the Pheu Thai Party, engaged in activities that sought to disrupt the constitutional order. These allegations include Thaksin’s purported directives to government bodies that allegedly benefited him during his prison sentence, his involvement in international negotiations with Cambodia regarding maritime resources, and his influence over constitutional amendments in collaboration with political parties.

The petition, submi
tted by Mr. Thirayuth, also accuses Thaksin of orchestrating political maneuvers, such as influencing the selection of a new Prime Minister and directing Pheu Thai’s internal resolutions regarding coalition parties. After the Attorney General did not act on the petition within the prescribed period, Mr. Thirayuth approached the Constitutional Court directly for intervention under Section 49 of the Constitution.

The court’s request for information from the Attorney General is intended to aid in determining the admissibility of the petition. The NACC is expected to provide a comprehensive report detailing any actions taken and evidence gathered in response to the allegations.
