Control team working to ease inflation in East Kalimantan: BI

Bank Indonesia (BI) has said that extensive collaboration and communication between the provincial Regional Inflation Control Team and districts, the government, and related parties has been proven to check inflation at the regional level.

“Coordination within the Regional Inflation Control Team in the East Kalimantan region continues to be conducted in order to maintain supply stability and price affordability so that inflation is under control,” the head of BI’s representative office in East Kalimantan province, Ricky Perdana Gozali, said here on Friday.

In August 2022, the East Kalimantan Regional Inflation Control Team conducted coordination to discuss farmer gatherings, market operations, and low-cost markets to support the National Movement for Food Inflation Control.

The 2022 National Coordination Meeting for Inflation Control, attended by President Joko Widodo and officials from the Home Affairs Ministry, was also hosted as a means to establish inflation control as the main focus of the central and regional governments.

Moreover, to encourage an increase in the local food supply, the Regional Inflation Control Team of Samarinda city conducted harvesting activities for P400 and IP300 rice in Sambutan district.

Other efforts included monitoring prices on a daily basis and establishing cooperation between regions and production centers, particularly for commodities that contributed to inflation, to support the stabilization of the inflation rate in East Kalimantan and push it toward the national inflation target range.

According to Gozali, the results of the team’s collaboration could be seen in August, when East Kalimantan recorded deflation of 0.26 percent after an inflation of 0.61 percent the previous month.

Based on expenditure groups, deflation in August stemmed from a decline in prices in the food, beverage, and tobacco category, as well as the transportation group.

The transportation group experienced a decline in prices after recording an inflation the previous month, with the deflation rate pegged at 1.49 percent, lower than the inflation of 1.21 percent recorded a month earlier.

“The deflation was mainly due to the normalization of public demand after the end of school holidays and Eid al-Adha the previous month. The main commodity that (contributed to) the deflation in the transportation category was air freight rates, which decreased by 10.87 percent in August,” Gozali informed.
