The House of Representatives (DPR) is committed to making the Indonesian G20 Presidency a success by holding the P20, which is expected to strengthen collaboration in facing global challenges, Speaker Puan Maharani has emphasized.
“DPR will succeed Indonesia’s Presidency at the G20 by holding the P20 as a parliaments forum of G20 countries. It will become a momentum to strengthen collaboration in facing global challenges in the future,” she said during a DPR plenary meeting at the opening of the Plenary Meeting Session I for 2022–2023 at the Parliament Complex, here, on Tuesday.
P20 is a forum for parliamentary speakers and people’s representatives from G20 countries, which aims to bring a parliamentary dimension to global governance and increase political support for international commitments.
This year’s P20 is themed “A Stronger Parliament for Sustainable Recovery,” which is in line with the theme of the Indonesian G20 Presidency—“Recover Together, Recover Stronger.”
Maharani said that the P20 will discuss four priority issues, namely the acceleration of sustainable development and the green economy; food and energy security, and economic challenges; effective parliaments and dynamic democracy; social inclusion, gender equality, and women’s empowerment.
“The four issues are relevant in the context of global recovery after the pandemic and various global problems that emerge. DPR will focus on the issue of food security, which is part of the issue of sustainable development and the green economy,” she added.
A joint commitment is needed from all countries on building food sovereignty without being hindered by various obstacles, including issues that are often associated with free trade, she said.
DPR has taken concrete steps to support sustainable development and the green economy by proposing and initiating the New and Renewable Energy Bill (RUU EBT), and it will start using solar cells to meet 25 percent of the electricity needs of the DPR building, she informed.
“The results of the P20 are expected to establish a mutual agreement, which can encourage real action in responding to the various global problems mentioned above,” she disclosed.
She said that the P20 agreement is a form of shared commitment that Indonesia is trying to orchestrate to build a healthy and safe world.
In addition, Indonesia is trying to build a peaceful world for everyone where justice and prosperity are enjoyed equally by all, she added.
Maharani said that DPR will encourage the parliaments of P20 member countries to continue to cooperate in an effort to achieve the expected targets through Indonesia’s leadership of the P20.
During the DPR plenary meeting, President Widodo delivered a statement on the draft of the state budget for the 2023 fiscal year along with the financial notes.
The President then submitted the Bill on the Draft of the State Budget for Fiscal Year 2023 along with the financial notes and supporting documents to the House Speaker, which was followed by the submission of the documents and a request for consideration from the House Speaker to the Speaker of the Regional Representative Council (DPD).
